Why Acceptance In Relation To Our Mental Health Challenges, Diagnosis and Recovery Is A Good Thing

For most people like myself, for the beginning of my ADHD and recovery journey, I thought of accepting things like the challenges of having an ADHD diagnosis or having substance abuse issues as a failure. I felt like this for years, but it isn’t true. Acceptance is not a personal failure when we accept where we are and the things we’ve experienced, and how those things affect us.
We’re taking the first steps needed to empower ourselves to relate to those things in a healthy, compassionate, and resilient way. I recall the first time I asked for help and listened. It wasn’t easy to get over my ego, but doing so was my first step in gaining my life back and led me down a road that was more rewarding than I ever thought possible.
We all have the power and will within ourselves to empower ourselves on our journeys but to find that power. We may need to take certain steps like seeking help from therapists and other mental health and medical professionals or 12 step programs. Additionally, here’s a great quote that perfectly defines acceptance. “Acceptance of one’s life has nothing to do with resignation; it does not mean running away from the struggle. On the contrary, it means accepting it as it comes, with all the handicaps of heredity, of suffering, of psychological complexes and injustices.” Paul Tournier
